Carey gets best of Elmont

Elmont entered its Week 3 Nassau Conference II football game against visiting Carey with back-to-back shutouts, but the Spartans ran into a flock of angry birds.

The Seahawks, coming off a frustrating loss at home to Mepham, got three touchdowns from senior running back Rob Zorn and three touchdown passes from senior quarterback Michael Locicero in a convincing 41-12 victory.

“We mixed it up well and finished drives,” Carey head coach Mike Stanley said. “I don’t want to take anything away from Mepham, but we struggled offensively against them and didn’t come out with the same kind of intensity we did in Week 1. The kids understand they just can’t slap on an orange helmet and walk on the field and win.”

Elmont (2-1) got on the board first when senior wideout Kyle Johnson hauled in a 15-yard scoring toss from senior quarterback William Faison 4:45 into the game. The extra-point try failed, and that’s where the bad news began for the hosts. Zorn capped Carey’s ensuing possession with a 5-yard touchdown run, and senior Steven Marino’s extra point put them ahead for good at 7-6.

The Seahawks (2-1) scored three times in the second quarter to build a 20-point halftime cushion. Zorn scored from a yard out in the opening minute of the quarter, then Locicero and the air attack started to groove. Senior Eddie Eymold, who had a busy day on defense trying to contain Johnson, caught a 20-yard touchdown pass and Marino hauled in a scoring strike from 27 yards for a 26-6 halftime lead.

“We made mistakes and they kept capitalizing,” Spartans head coach Jay Hegi said. “Obviously they were a little annoyed from the loss to Mepham. It’s hard to explain how the wind could come out of us in the second quarter, but it did.”

Carey tacked on two more scores in the third, one a 4-yard run by Zorn and the other a 33-yard reception by Marino. Defensively, senior Andrew Gentile responded to his first start of the year with seven tackles an interception.
