Carey unbeaten through six games

After a disappointing 2012 campaign, one that yielded just three victories, things are looking up for the Carey Lady Seahawks on the soccer pitch. A roster filled with young, talented players, along with a more favorable schedule has them in the hunt for the first league title in program history.

After last Friday’s dramatic 2-1 road win against Friends Academy, the Lady Seahawks are in second place at 3-0-3 in Conference A-IV. Freshman Emily Johnson’s goal with just five seconds to play gave Carey the win. Junior Patricia Curtin’s tied the game at 1-1 off a corner kick in the 55th minute.

Lola Intagliata, in her 13th season as coach, couldn’t be happier with the program’s progress. “The move down to Class A has certainly helped us out in terms of the competition we’re facing,” Intagliata said. “As a team, we’re becoming a family. One girls leaves the field, her replacement works just as hard. There’s no drop off. I’m very excited about this team’s potential.”

Carey’s season got off on the right foot with a 3-2 home win over intra-district rival Floral Park. Curtin, who is solid at setting up teammates and finishing, had a pair of tallies. Mackenzie Nyitray, one of the team’s 12 sophomores, had a goal and an assist.

Carey didn’t score in its next two matches, but strong net minding by Kelsey Barnes enabled the Lady Seahawks to leave the pitch with consecutive 0-0 ties with Wheatley and Hewlett. In the matchup with first place Wheatley, Barnes was outstanding. The senior keeper made 15 saves, many from close range.

Barnes made it three straight shutouts when the Lady Seahawks blanked Glen Cove 6-0. Curtin had a goal and two helpers. Sophomore Brett Robison added a goal and an assist.

Carey’s defensive unit is undoubtedly its strength. Sophomore sweeper Rebecca Vilchez, who was a standout in the win over Friends, junior stopper Francesca Cozza, freshman Alison Adamo, and junior Kelly Flanagan have been tremendous on the backline.

Sophomore forwards Amanda Ulzheimer and Luciana Lombardo add scoring punch to a deep roster. Both scored goals in the win over Glen Cove.

Senior captain Michelle Bedeian, a five-year varsity performer, is the heart and soul of the team. The left-footed midfielder has a pair of goals and an assist on the season. The Lady Seahawks are playing without senior captain Sabrina Melgarejo, an All-County recipient last season, who suffered an injury. Senior captain Gianna Capriotti is a steady performer.

Intagliata likes the makeup of the team. “With as many as seven girls who can score, we’re very unpredictable from an opponent’s standpoint,” Intagliata said. “Teams can’t mark just one of our girls because we’re so deep. We just need to get better at finishing and score more goals. As a team, we need to be a little more dominant. If we stay healthy, we should be fine.”
