Carriage house, vintage vehicle destroyed in blaze

High winds fanned flames that fully engulfed a century-old carriage house at the rear of a private home in Baldwin on Jan. 18, a fire department spokesman said.

Baldwin firefighters had to battle both the blaze and wind chills in the single digits, said Chief Michael Jazylo. No injuries were reported.

The call for the fire, at 2660 Grand Ave. near Atlantic Avenue, came in just after 3 p.m.

Two ladder companies and four engine companies fought the blaze for over an hour before it was declared under control, Jazylo said. In addition, 80 firefighters were called to the scene while fire units from Freeport, Oceanside and South Hempstead stood by at Baldwin Fire Headquarters to handle all other alarms.

The building was declared a total loss, as was the vintage vehicle housed in the carriage house.

Nassau County fire marshals were called in to investigate the cause of the blaze, but Jazylo said the fire was not considered suspicious.
