The club is also collecting cash or check donations to help the Garcia family with mounting expenses, ranging from medical bills to funeral costs.

Brendan Smith, the Chiefs’ president, said the league is grieving the loss of Cindy — and committed to helping Elizabeth in the days, weeks and months ahead as she recovers from her injuries. “[The Garcias] are a family that is so committed to their daughters and their activities,” Smith said. “… I have fond memories of Mr. Garcia sitting with all of the other dads, discussing the days’ matches.”

Smith also said that the club’s executive board is discussing plans to organize a testimonial charity and soccer match in honor of the Garcia girls, featuring their teammates from the club and their school teams, along with some all-star participants from the local professional and collegiate soccer communities.

Cindy Garcia was a sophomore at Malverne High. She entered the district in 2012, after moving to Lynbrook. Elizabeth Garcia Gamez is an eighth-grader at Howard T. Herber Middle School. Both girls were graduates of Clear Stream Avenue School in Valley Stream District 30.

Clear Stream Avenue has also taken up a collection for the family, and donations can be dropped off at the school. “It just lets the family know that our family is here to support them,” said Richard Mansfield, who taught both girls there — Cindy in fifth grade, and Elizabeth in fifth and sixth grades. He said he hoped the money would help the family.
