A 17-year-old student from Valley Stream was arrested at Elmont Memorial High School on March 30, after allegedly knocking down and choking his teacher.

According to the Nassau County Police Department's 5th Precinct, Umair Hameed, was in the hallway of Elmont Memorial, located on Ridge Road in Elmont, at 8:45 a.m. on Friday when he was instructed by a 50-year-old male teacher — whose name has not been released by police — to turn off music that Hameed was playing on his cell phone. When Hameed refused to turn the music down, police said, the teacher took the phone out of his hand.

Hameed then knocked his teacher to the floor of the hallway and choked him around his neck, before heading to class, detectives said.

School officials called police, and Hameed was arrested. The assaulted teacher refused medical attention at the scene, police said.

Hameed has been charged with second-degree assault and strangulation, and will be arraigned on March 31 at the First District Court in Hempstead.
