Deadline for Shelter, Power Program aid extended to Dec. 31
Applications need to be submitted before December 19 to the Nassau County STEP Program.

Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano on Dec. 19 urged residents to apply for Sheltering and Temporary Essential Power (STEP) Program assistance before the new deadline of December 31st. The program provides emergency assistance with restoring temporary electricity, heat and hot water to homes which can shelter homeowners while permanent repair work continues. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Nassau County STEP Program has thus far assessed over 5,400 homes.

Residents seeking assistance through the Nassau County STEP Program should dial 1-888-684-4267. Once the call is made, a program administrator dispatches an assessment team. After an assessment is conducted and a scope of work is detailed and approved, the contractor will obtain the required permits and schedule the work. Work must be completed 60 days from when the assessment was conducted.

The STEP program came to my home on November 26th with the promise of electric heaters and hot water to keep us in our home while permanent repairs occurred. If my family of 6 waited for the STEP program to come through with these items, we'd be dead by now. I find it ridiculous that it takes so long to get electric heaters to a house. Almost coming on to a month since they visited my home. I made at least 3 calls back to STEP and nobody has a timeline as to when these items will come. Needless to say I have now installed my permanent heating and hot water system, so those electric heaters are useless to me at this point. Pretty much has me envisioning that Nassau Country is going to be left with an airplane hangar of heaters because those who needed them have cut the cord and are no longer relying on STEP to help. Some quick fix program this is. Absolutely unbelievable how long this takes. My house sustained an unbelievable amount of damage. I have enough worries than to get empty promises from some program that is not working.

...and I do acknowledge that this article says 60 day turnaround. I just firmly believe that is too long for this type of program and the solution that its supposed to provide.
