Digging out again

The 40-degree temperature and quick response by public works crews made short work of the Feb. 5 snow that dumped almost a foot on southern Nassau County, and made a liar out of groundhogs everywhere.

School Superintendent Rosmarie Bovino told the Island Park PTA at a meeting the evening before, that she was planning on a late (2 hour) opening for Island Park Schools.

By Friday five inches was already on the ground and the snow was falling at a rate of two and a half inches an hour for a total of nine inches according to the National Weather Service ⎯ Island Park and Oceanside schools were closed.

The Long Island Railroad and all local airports had numerous delays for most of the day.

PSEG Long Island reported over 11,000 power outages, with less than five Oceanside homes still out by sunset.

Major roads were cleared by the New York State, Nassau County, the Town of Hempstead and Island Park village in short order. Side roads had at least one pass by sunset as well.
