A garage fire on Flagstone Lane in Westbury, within the East Meadow Fire District, was put out by the East Meadow Fire Department on Aug. 9 with minimal damage to the home.

EMFD volunteer and spokesman John O’Brien Sr. detailed the department’s response on the department website, eastmeadowfd.com. he said volunteers were alerted of the fire shortly after 8 p.m., and were on the scene four minutes later. “Chief [James] Kane arrived on the scene to find smoke coming from the garage,” O’Brien wrote, “threatening the attached modest two-story Levitt home.”

Rescue 5, Engines 613 and 614, Ladders 617 and 619, and Heavy Rescue 616 arrived shortly after. Within five minutes of arrival, O’Brien said, all visible fire was knocked down. “With the fire extinguished, firefighters installed a high velocity mechanical fan to exhaust all smoke,” he said, “and equally importantly, the low levels of carbon monoxide to ensure a safe re-entry of the homeowner.”

There were no injuries, and O’Brien said the fire was confined to the interior of the garage. Cause of the fire was placed in the hands of the Nassau County Fire Marshal’s office.
