East Rockaway resident Ethel Gilloon has been elected Lt. Governor for the Long Island Southwest Division of Kiwanis for 2012-2013 year. She will be working with nine clubs.

Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers. Gilloon has been with the East Rockaway Kiwanis Club for 15 years, and was named its Kiwanian of the Year in 2010.

Kiwanis sponsors Key Clubs for the high school, Builders Club for junior high and K Kids for grammar school children.  These clubs all do age-appropriate community service, and all the clubs work to send handicapped children, military families children and needy children to a camp that Kiwanis runs in upstate New York. Kiwanians also cook dinners at Ronald McDonald House, collect food for the needy, raise money for local organizations such as the fire departments, nonprofits in need, and veterans, and collect items for disaster relief. They also award scholarships to graduating seniors.

“I am looking forward to a year of service to the clubs and the people in our communities, making the world a little bit better, however I can,” said Gilloon.
