A 22-year-old man was fatally shot in Baldwin last Saturday morning, and another man was shot in the leg, Nassau County police said.

According to detectives, police officers responded to a disturbance in front of Love Jones Café, at 1920 Grand Ave., at 3:41 a.m. on Aug. 2. There they found two victims, a 39-year-old man who had been shot in the leg, and the 22-year-old, who had been shot in the chest. Both were taken to local hospitals. The younger man, whom police later identified as Daquan Gaskin, of Baltimore, was pronounced dead at 4:17 a.m. The 39-year-old man was treated and released.

The investigation is continuing, and detectives ask anyone with information about the incident to call Nassau County Crime Stoppers at (800) 244-TIPS.

The Baldwin Civic Association plans to host a community meeting on Aug. 11, at 7:30 p.m., at the Baldwin Public Library in response to the shooting. BCA President David Viana said that a member of the Nassau County Police Department’s 1st Precinct would be on hand.

Viana said the meeting would provide residents and community members with an opportunity to ask questions or address their concerns to the 1st Precinct. Leg. Laura Curran, who reached out to the 1st Precinct, added, “Public safety is crucial to stable communities, and clear communication between police and the public is vital.”

Detectives request anyone with information regarding this crime to call Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.
