It’s the Friday morning before the official dedication of West Hempstead’s 9/11 Memorial in Hall’s Pond Park, and Steve Wagner was busy putting the finishing touches on the memorial. “We sealed the steel. You’ve got be concerned with the elements,” said Wagner, an employee of All Pro Painting on Hempstead Turnpike, which is donating their services to the memorial. Wagner also painted 12 of the squares on the memorial’s foundation, which represent the 12 West Hempstead residents who died in the terrorist attacks.

The dedication ceremony, scheduled for July 14 at 7 p.m., is something many West Hempstead residents will not want to miss. The event will feature an honor guard, bagpipers from the New York City Fire Department, vocal performances, and participation from the hamlet’s two fire departments, police auxiliary, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, houses of worship, local politicians and more. Refreshments will be served after the ceremony has concluded.
