Five Towns Holocaust remembrance services

Congregation Beth Sholom in Lawrence and Congregation Sons of Israel in Woodmere host Wednesday events

Two dozen Five Towns and area synagogues are joining together at Congregation Beth Sholom at 390 Broadway in Lawrence on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. for the annual memorial service to remember the six million Jews who were killed during the Holocaust and commemorate the Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, that begins on April 15 and ends at night the following day.

Dr. Mordecai Paldiel, a child survivor of the Holocaust, a lecturer and former director of the Department of the Righteous at Yad Yashem, will be the keynote speaker. A video highlighting the stories of survivors will be shown and the Hebrew Academy of Long Beach fifth grade choir under the direction of Sandy Shmuley will perform.

In addition, Temple Hillel in North Woodmere, Temple Beth El in Cedaehurst and Congregation Sons of Israel in Woodmere are partnering on Holocaust Remmembrance Day at the Woodmere synagogue at 11 Irving Place, also on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. It is free and open to the public.

Beth Lilach, senior director of Education and Community Affairs at the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County in Glen Cove  will speak about the Holocaust and genocide: truth, myth and choice.
