Senior David Henry will cap a successful indoor track and field season for Long Beach when he competes in the Triple Jump at this weekend’s state championships at Cornell University.

Henry, who placed second in the event at the Nassau County Class A championships, finished third in the State Qualifier meet at St. Anthony’s High School Feb. 15 and advanced with a leap of 44-feet, 5-inches.

His high-water mark, Marines coach Greg Milone said, is 44-6. “David’s been a key contributor for four years and scored in three events in the conference meet,” Milone said. “He’s a very athletic kid and always steps up in the big spot.”

Long Beach enjoyed a solid regular season and placed third in the Conference 2 meet behind Calhoun and East Meadow with 69 points. “To be honest, we were a little disappointed,” Milone said. “We were excited about our chances to win, but in the end Calhoun and East Meadow performed a little better.”

Junior John Anfossi won the conference Long Jump title (21-7 ¾), junior Kyle Mosley was second in the 55 High Hurdles (7.9 seconds), senior Brant Scott finished third in the 600 and fifth in the 300, and senior David Poretz and junior John Delahanty were second and third, respectively, in the Pole Vault.

Milone said he considers Mosley to be among the top hurdlers in the conference, and Portez and Delahanty helped the team in an event it just started to build last spring.

Anfossi, who was third in Class A in the Long Jump, has taken his talent to another level, Milone said. “John’s an intense competitor,” he said.
