Live entertainment on the “Red Planet Café” stage is featured throughout the weekend, with something for everyone to enjoy. Merrick’s Robbie Rosen, an American Idol favorite, appears on Saturday, at 1:45 p.m. Kevin Covais, of American Idol fame, returns to the festival once again, to perform on Sunday, at 1:45 p.m. Rockville Centre’s Leggz Ltd. Dance troupe entertains, along with Pearsall Dance of Bellmore and NY Dancers Studio of East Meadow, in addition to other local groups, including some school musical ensembles. Also, World Champion 1986 New York Mets star Mookie Wilson makes a special appearance on Saturday and Sunday, from 1-3 p.m.
Kids will certainly want to visit with Santa, who will be at the festival throughout the weekend, ready for that holiday photo. And, of course, everyone will be drawn to the Festival marketplace, which includes the Festival Toy Shoppe and the Dept. 56 Shop, to do some holiday shopping.
Festival-goers can enjoy rides on the historic Nunley’s Carousel, which certainly holds fond memories for many families. Built in 1912, the 40-horse carousel has entertained generations of Long Islanders in its Baldwin home for over 50 years and continues to be a regional treasure.
The festival has legions of devoted volunteers for whom the event is a longstanding holiday tradition. Marissa and Sheryl Kleiner, mother and daughter from East Meadow, – volunteers for many years – enthusiastically contribute their time and energy. “We love volunteering at the Festival of Trees,” [Marissa] Kleiner said.  “It is really fun, especially in the cookie decorating area! We enjoy seeing all the happy people and we are so happy to help the UCPN.”
For Bruce and Robin Starr, husband and wife from Merrick, who volunteer at UCPN year round and at various fundraising events, the Festival of Trees is among their favorites. “The atmosphere at the festival is truly one of goodwill and holiday spirit,” the Starrs said. “We enjoy spending time there and listening to the great choral groups, seeing the trees and getting a chance to tour the museum at the Cradle.”
