Hundreds attended the Franklin Square and Elmont Memorial Day parades, which were held last Monday.

The Elmont Memorial Day Parade began at 10:30 a.m. at the Sewanhaka High School, located at 500 Tulip Ave. in Floral Park, and traveled south on Covert Avenue, to Hempstead Turnpike, then turned west on the turnpike and ended at the Elmont Memorial Library.

Following the parade was the Veteran’s Memorial Ceremony, which was held at the Elmont Memorial Library. The parade and ceremony was hosted by the American Legion’s Post 1033 in Elmont. Elmont’s Memorial Day Parade has been held since the 1930s, when it ran along Belmont Boulevard.

Last Monday's parade was one of the biggest Memorial Day parades in Elmont's history. Nearly 200 people marched in the parade, and Hempstead Turnpike was filled with hundreds of residents. Al Harper, superintendent of the Elmont Union Free School District, was the Elmont Memorial Day Parade's grand marshal.

"The ceremony was beautiful," said Ralph Esposito, of the Elmont American Legion Post 1033.

The Franklin Square Memorial Day Parade, which is sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2718, was held at 10 a.m. The parade began in front of the Franklin Square Public Library, located at 19 Lincoln Rd. in Franklin Square.

Bruno Caracciolo, of the Franklin Funeral Home, served as the parade's grand marshal.
