Kennedy extends winning streak

The hits just keep on coming for a Kennedy softball team that’s averaging more than 10 per game (74 total) during a 6-0 start in Conference AB-II.

The Lady Cougars have had their share of bloops, but they’ve also been swinging heavy bats at the plate piling up a total of 22 extra-base hits, including nine home runs while carrying a team average over .400. The team has also piled up 17 stolen bases.

“We’re solid throughout the lineup with our top nine girls,” first-year coach Dean Zenie said. “They’ve all been working very hard. We’ve put a lot of time in the cage and worked on mechanics. They’re very talented and a great group.”

Junior centerfielder Cora Travaglione has been the leader of the lineup, hitting at a .640 clip with five home runs and a slugging percentage of 1.500. She finished a 7-2 victory over Jericho last Friday 2-for-2 at the plate with a triple, home run, four runs scored and a pair of runs batted in. Freshman pitcher Danielle Polirer, the everyday first baseman, went six innings in her first start of the season allowing two earned runs on seven hits and two walks with seven strikeouts.

“It’s been a combination of good hitting and good pitching,” Zenie said. “Sydney [Yormack] has done a great job on the mound and Danielle had a great win against Jericho.”

Yormack, a junior who earned a save in the win over the Lady Jayhawks, has won all five of her starts, including a 6-5 decision over Floral Park on April 15, allowing just one earned run in the complete game victory. Travaglione again provided power, blasting a two-run homer.
