She spent some of her summers in Pakistan, volunteering at her aunt’s Fatima Hospital where she was able to help care for patients. Zaman intends to use the money toward tuition, spreading it across all four years.

“I think it’s the fact that I’m really balanced,” Zaman, who was involved in numerous academic honor societies and played varsity badminton and tennis, said about receiving the award. “I try my best in everything I do.”

The Kiwanis Club, she said, has inspired her to continue serving the community while attending college and she hopes to one day become a club member.

Filippi plans to attend St. John’s University to study marketing and wants to work on a marketing team for a fashion magazine.

She spent her time at North tutoring four days a week and found time to manage the boys’ soccer team. She also spends much of her time volunteering with Famee Furlane, a group dedicated to helping the ancestors of Friuli, Italy and helping to promote their culture. She serves as the webmaster for the club.

Filippi said that she will use the money to curb the cost of her “very expensive” books at school. She said she is thankful for the club’s generosity.

“It means a lot,” she said. “It’s nice to know that people are here to help the youth. I really appreciate it.”
