"I have made it abundantly clear to the State Department that no resource should be spared in the search for Mr. Bobis, no stone should be left unturned, and that Mr. Bobis' family must have every iota of assistance available from the U.S. Government during this difficult time," Schumer said in a statement.

Bobis, who holds a black belt in karate, grew up in Long Beach and is known as a leader in the surf community. He is a founding member of the Long Beach Surfer’s Association and launched the high school’s surf team, which he coaches. Bobis, who graduated from Long Beach High, has been a math teacher at the school for about seven years, school officials said. He serves as the advisor to the district’s competitive surf club and surf team. Bobis is described as a very popular and well-liked teacher by both students and staff, and is considered “a vital part of the school community.”

“Still praying for a safe return, stay strong Bobis,” a student wrote on a Facebook page dedicated to Daniel, called Daniel Bobis Info. “You're honestly my favorite teacher. You're such a good person and that's why I know you're still out there safe; waiting for someone to find you. I know you'll come home and have some crazy stories for us when school starts.”

“Clearly, he’s a beloved teacher,” Principal Dr. Gaurav Passi said at the vigil, where many of Bobis’s fellow teachers gathered. “There is a lot of worry, and yet a great deal of hope.”

School officials and residents have been lobbying state and federal officials, as well as those in Indonesia, to help with the search effort. “We are deeply concerned about the safety and well-being of Danny Bobis,” Superintendent David Weiss said in a statement. “We have been in contact with Senator [Charles] Schumer’s office to notify them about the situation and urge them to provide assistance to the local authorities with the rescue efforts. Our thoughts and prayers are with Danny’s family and friends and we hope for his safe return.”

A donation fund for Daniel Bobis was created to support the search effort, including helicopter rental, local manpower and travel expenses, among others. All donations will be given directly to the family. To donate, log in to Paypal and send funds to dannybobisfund@gmail.com.
