Lawrence E. Elovich, a well-known local attorney, former Long Beach Democratic Committee chairman and past president of the Long Beach Chamber of Commerce, died on Friday at age 77 after a battle with cancer.

More than a thousand people attended his funeral service today at Temple Emanu-el, where his family and close friends — including former U.S. Sen. Al D'Amato, Congressman Peter King and N.Y. state Comptroller Tom DiNapoli — shared their memories and recalled a man who fought for the city and reached out to both Republicans and Democrats alike.

"Larry" Elovich is survived by his wife, Helen Mirel, whom he married in 1963; his three daughters, Lisa, Lauree and Lynn; and nine grandchildren. Friends recalled Elovich as not only a respected attorney and political advisor, but a doting husband and father who enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

"Larry was a good friend for almost 50 years," said Long Beach City Court Judge Roy Tepper. "He was active in numerous organizations and helped a lot of people in the community. Larry was devoted to his family and will be missed very much by so many people."

"He's like a legend in Long Beach ... he led a very interesting life," added close friend Stanley Fleishman. "There are many people in this world who go by one name: Cher, Madonna ... and then there was Larry. When you said his name everyone knew who you were talking about. [Larry] made Long Beach the strongest political Democratic party in Nassau County. But he was more than just a local politician — he's known throughout the state and respected by both parties."

Elovich was a senior partner at Elovich & Adell in Long Beach, a practicing trial lawyer specializing in personal injury and medical malpractice cases. He also served as a Nassau University Medical Center trustee and sat on the Board of Directors for the American Cancer Society and Long Beach Cancer Care. In addition to holding numerous other positions, Elovich was a former chairman of the Nassau County Bar Association's legislative committee and was past president of the Long Beach Lawyers Association. He served as a senior member of Long Beach Medical Center's Board of Trustees, and was a trustee of the Long Island Power Authority.
