“Matt’s a really hard worker and always sticks to his game plan,” Adams said of Maquet, who missed a few weeks with an injury. “Tyreek won a weight class you usually see a senior or junior winning, so he did a great job.

“The best way for these young guys to approach the county tournament is to take things one match at a time,” Adams added. “It’s not as overwhelming that way.”

One of Long Beach’s veterans, senior Keith Wildstein, also emerged atop his weight class at the qualifier. He beat Port Washington’s Nicolas Dilucia, 6-2, in the final at 160 pounds, for his 28th win in 35 bouts. “Keith has had a wonderful season,” Adams said.

Seniors Jon Greifenberger (138 pounds), Marke Sutton (145), and Mike Alcivar (152), and freshman John Colletti (126) advanced to their respective finals in the qualifier. Sutton dropped a heartbreaker to Oscar Puk of Lawrence after holding a 7-1 lead, but Adams said he’ll be dangerous in the county tournament. Colletti, who moved up one weight class, recorded three wins before losing a hard-fought 4-3 final to Teddy Tanenbaum of Port Washington.

The Marines also had five third-place finishers and seven fourth-place finishers make it to the big stage at Hofstra. Sophomores Josh Bourne (113), Andrew Garcia (138) and Marc Paez (145), along with freshman Greg Wildstein (106), took third, while seniors Glenn Rutherig (220) and Kelvin Alvarez (182), junior Alan Teemer, freshmen Pablo Martinez (99), Joe Giordano (145) and Jeffrey Alvarez (195), and eighth-grader Elijah Rodriguez (113) grabbed fourth.
