In a top-10 list that includes tony communities like Scarsdale and Eastchester, Long Beach was named the 10th safest city in New York last month.
The seaside community was included among the 50 safest cities to live in the state by Safewise Security Systems, an online home security resource. Safewise said it paired national crime data released by the FBI in its 2011 Crime in the U.S. Report with its own research to create a comprehensive list of the safest cities with 15,000 residents or more as of 2011.

“This was specifically designed to assist families looking for a safe city to settle down in,” City Manager Jack Schnirman said at the Dec. 17 City Council meeting. “The City of Long Beach finished ahead of many other Long Island communities on the list, including Rockville Centre and Garden City, which were 29th and 30th respectively.”

Floral Park— an incorporated village with approximately 15,863 residents — was named the safest city, with Safewise saying that no murders, rapes or arsons were reported to law enforcement in 2011. The town of Bedford in Westchester County, which has about 17,000 residents, placed second. Long Beach, which has an average population of 33,000 residents, was ranked just below Hyde Park, N.Y. and above Lynbrook, with Safewise writing, “Touted as New York’s famous City by the Sea, Long Beach is located on a barrier island just south of Long Island. Boarded by the Atlantic Ocean and Reynolds Channel, it is notorious as a place generations of families gather to enjoy picnics, build sandcastles, ride waves and stroll the iconic boardwalk.”
