Summer Sounds

Long Island Philharmonic
Enjoy the stirring sounds of the Long Island Philharmonic when the orchestra returns to Eisenhower Park for its annual free summer concert. Music Director David Stewart Wiley leads his ensemble in a concert of all-time favorites, aptly titled, “Music Under the Stars.” The varied program includes the finale movement of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4, Morton Gould’s “American Salute,” music from Howard Shore’s score for “The Lord of the Rings,” Bach, Dvorak, Saint-Saens, and much more. The orchestra’ own, violinist Gregor Kitzis, playing the musical saw, brings a unique sound to the performance, with tenor Christopher Macchio as the concert’s other guest soloist. The rousing finale concludes with a spectacular fireworks show by Grucci.
Friday, Aug. 8, 7 p.m. Eisenhower Park’s Harry Chapin Lakeside Theatre, East Meadow (631) 293-2223 or www.liphilharmonic.org.

Family Fun

‘The Little Mermaid Jr.’
The beloved tale of the beautiful young mermaid, Ariel, in her magical underwater kingdom springs to life once again in Plaza Theatrical Productions’ staging of the enchanting musical, adapted from the Disney’s 2008 Broadway production. Ariel longs to leave her ocean home — and her fins — behind and live in the world above. But first she’ll have to defy her father King Triton, played by East Meadow’s John Waryas. Then she must make a deal with the evil sea witch Ursula, portrayed by Katie Quigley, of Franklin Square, and convince handsome Prince Eric that she’s the girl whose enchanting voice he’s been seeking. The cast also includes Baldwin’s Jeremy Smith as Ariel’s friend and confidante, Sebastian.
Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 9-10, 11:30 and 2 p.m. $12. The performance is followed by a meet and greet with the cast. Long Island Children’s Museum, Museum Row, Garden City. (516) 599-6870 or visit www.plazatheatrical.com.
