“On defense, we did a great job sliding when we needed to,” Leighley said. “And our best guys matched up well against their best guys.”

Trailing 7-3 after Daly’s fourth goal, the Marines answered with two Rafferty goals and one off the stick of freshman Sam Brown. However, they couldn’t keep the momentum or get the equalizer.

“We only have three seniors playing, but we thought we had a shot,” Kaspar said. “I scouted Lynbrook four times. They’re good, and tonight was the best they played from what I’ve seen.

“I told our kids at this point in the season, winning comes down to 50 percent of what the coaches tell you and your ability, and 50 percent of who shows up,” Kaspar added. “Both teams showed up, but the penalties were too much for us to overcome.”
