When asked why she would do such a thing during a competition, Taff said that 13 years of playing soccer taught her the values of friendly competition and sportsmanship. Her coaches, she said, "always emphasized being a team player and leader no matter the outcome of the match."

Having those values and a healthy self-confidence, it was second nature for the former soccer team captain to dish out a few pep talks. "I feel that once a person is secure with ... herself, you don't have any fears giving advice," she said.

Taff will continue to share advice during upcoming public appearances she has to make as part of her Miss Long Island Teen title. She plans to spread awareness of her Women in Sports platform, which focuses the use of sports in confidence building and esteem development, and the importance of volunteerism.

In the meantime, Taff is eagerly preparing to begin classes at New York University, where she plans to pursue degrees in broadcast journalism and acting, and for her next pageant, Miss New York Teen USA 2011, in November.

Knowing she's got Long Island's support, Taff is excited and ready to take on the challenge. "I am really looking forward to my busy and fun-filled year," she said.
