Merrick Library budget easily passes

An overwhelming majority of residents who voted on the Merrick Library’s 2015-16 budget — more than 83 percent — supported the proposal, which will take effect July 1.

It will modestly raise spending on public services, building maintenance and operating costs and increase the library’s tax levy by 2.16 percent, slightly less than a state-imposed cap. It will cut some funding for employees’ pensions. Library Director Ellen Firer declined to estimate how much the budget will increase the average Merrick household’s property taxes.

“We appreciate the community support,” Firer said, “and we’re always open for suggestions and comments.”

Turnout for the April 15 library vote was small. The budget passed 158-32 — in a community with 16,603 adults, according to the 2010 U.S. Census.

Library President Donna Rosenblum, running unopposed, was re-elected to the Board of Trustees.
