Nassau County police arrested a mother and her son on Wednesday after they allegedly sold heroin to an undercover agent at their Long Beach home.

Police said that Kelly Cavanagh, 53, and her son, William, 22, sold an undisclosed amount of heroin to an agent with the department’s Narcotics/Vice Bureau from their apartment, at 261 Shore Rd., on July 28 at 4:25 p.m.

On Oct. 14, at 5:15 p.m., police said Kelly Cavanagh again sold the drug to an agent at the apartment.

Police said both Kelly Cavanagh and her son were located by officers from the NCPD’s Bureau of Special Operations on Nov. 26 and placed under arrest without incident.

Both were charged with third-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance and third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance. Kelly Cavanagh faces two counts of both charges. They were arraigned on Thursday at First District Court in Hempstead.

This was the second major heroin arrest in Long Beach in a month, and comes at a time when police and local community groups are working to address what they call a growing heroin epidemic.

Last month, a city employee was arrested on felony drug charges after she allegedly sold heroin while working as a part-time clerk at the city’s bus depot. That arrest came after the Long Beach Police Department launched an investigation into heroin dealers in the area in response to a series of local drug overdoses.
