Nassau County video-enforcing school speed zones

Posted

Nassau County started video enforcement of school speed zones at 20 sites across the county, including two in the Bellmore-Merrick area, during the first week of September, when school began. Eventually, Nassau officials say they will install 56 cameras across the county.

The two local cameras are found on Merrick Avenue –– one in front of Chatterton Elementary School in Merrick and one in front of Camp Avenue Elementary School in North Merrick.

County officials, who received state legislative approval to erect the cameras, say they hope to improve traffic safety while generating $25 million annually in speeding tickets –– funds that will go to offset the county budget.

Nassau joins New York City this year in installing video cameras to keep watch over school speed zones. Suffolk officials say they hope to begin video enforcement in 2015.
According to Nassau County’s website, motorists are ticketed when they drive through a school zone at 10 mph or greater than the posted speed limit. Large signs warn drivers that they are entering video-enforced zones. Tickets are $80 each.
