Installation of the south retaining wall began on Aug. 5, from Lincoln to Neptune. On Thursday, ipe decking began from Lafayette to Washington, work that will continue through Aug. 16. The schedule also lists work on the new boardwalk's security wall that will take place on Aug. 12-16, from Long Beach Boulevard to Riverside, while ipe decking from Washington to Lindell is set to begin on Aug. 15.

The boardwalk’s new antique-style light posts, Schnirman said, use energy-efficient LED lighting, and Wi-Fi will now be available on both the boardwalk and the beach. He added that the more than 700 memorial benches are being refurbished and will be installed soon.

However, while most of the benches were stored by the city, there are a number of them still with their sponsors, officials said. In order to refurbish and reinstall them, city officials said that they will need to be returned "as soon as possible," and earlier this week asked that those who opted to store their benches at home contact the Beach Maintenance Department.

"As the benches stored by the city are already undergoing refurbishment, we need your bench returned as soon as possible," read a statement on the city's website.

To arrange a pick-up or drop-off for your bench, contact Beach Maintenance at (516) 432-2606.
