New theater, classrooms for Lynbrook High School?

The current auditorium, which has a maximum occupancy of 450 people and opened when the building did more than 90 years ago, would be converted into a lecture hall with about 200 seats. LHS last underwent a major renovation in the late 1970s that included work to the auditorium. Two resource rooms would be constructed in the back of the current auditorium.

As technology becomes an increasing part of education, administrators would also like to reconfigure the library to give students more resources to access information. Currently, many students sit in the library during their free periods, but often do not have access to a computer when a class is being held there.

Also up for consideration for the bond is a window replacement project at the Kindergarten Center, installing generators in each school, air conditioning some rooms the public uses within the district and installing two elevators at Marion Street Elementary School, one at Waverly Park Elementary School and possibly one at the Kindergarten Center.

Why admins are proposing it

Enrollment at Lynbrook schools hasn’t significantly increased in recent years, but Burak said the number of students in the music program has. Due in part to the rise in music students at the lower level, an addition to South Middle School was completed in the 2004-05 school year and one at North Middle School should begin over the summer.

“Within the past decade our music program has truly blossomed,” Burak said.

“As the music program took off,” Rainis added, “there came a need to provide parents with a venue that they could go to to watch their children perform.” Each of the district’s elementary and middle schools host their concerts at LHS, which takes space away from the high school clubs or teams that normally use it.

Music students currently use music teachers’ offices to practice in, but Lynch said it’s a cramped space with poor acoustics.
