Long Island native and former Jets and Dolphins QB Jay Fiedler has a unique partnership with Canine Companions. Fielder was born and raised in Oceanside, New York, and starred for the Oceanside High School Sailors as a quarterback in football, a point guard in basketball, and as a decathlete in track and field. After graduating from Dartmouth University, where he set school records for touchdown passes, passing yards, and total offense, Jay was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in 1994. Jay led the Miami Dolphins to the AFC title in 2001, and also came home to play for the NY Jets in 2005. Since retiring from the NFL, Jay is the director for the Sports Academy at Brookwood Camps and Prime Time Sports Camps along with his brother Scott. Brookwood is a summer sleep away camp that has been family owned by the Fiedler’s since 1986 located on 160 acres in the Tri-state region of New York State’s Sullivan County. Jay is passionate about instruction in sports as a one of the building blocks for learning. He frequently speaks to area school children about how hard work and education will help them achieve their goals, and has regularly invited Canine Companions Graduate Teams and Volunteers to assist him in getting that message out. “I have good experiences and good memories to share,” says Fiedler. “I think those experiences can help others achieve their goals.” His path to success is a story of determination and perseverance, and Jay says Canine Companions graduate teams share the same story of hard work and determination.

Canine Companions for Independence is a national non-profit organization that provides highly trained assistance dogs to children and adults with disabilities.
