Once again, L.I. roads make deadliest list

On April 3, Vision of Long Island, a nonprofit advocacy group, held its second annual complete streets summit at the Sustainability Institute at Molloy College, with government leaders, planners, engineers, non-profit leaders and community investors who support the creation of walkable communities. The conference also featured victims who experienced dangers themselves or had loved ones killed while commuting on unsafe sidewalks.

In a Vision Long Island newsletter, Alexander said people are getting hurt on area roads, and something needs to be done. At the summit, the Long Island Complete Streets Coalition was announced. It will partner with chambers of commerce, civic associations, local governments, engineering and professional trade groups, transit advocates and members of the public. The group will plan efforts, communicate on local projects, act as a clearinghouse for information and lobby for better streets.

Homeowners responsible for sidewalks

In the Town of Hempstead, homeowners are responsible for installing and repairing their sidewalks. The cost of sidewalk repairs depends on the square footage, severity of the case and contractor (private or town). Pricing is based on square footage, and homeowners who must repair their sidewalks have 30 days from the date of an inspector’s notice to complete repairs using a private contractor. If you choose to have the town repair your sidewalk, you can be put on a five-year payment plan.

Hempstead’s sidewalk law dates back to Dec. 19, 1944. Homeowners without sidewalks are not required to install them. If you already have one, however, you cannot remove it. Homeowners who want to repair their sidewalks must obtain the proper town permits to do so.
