Pink bagels to support the cause

Throughout October, Brower Bagels in Oceanside sold pink bagels for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

“We’re the first bagel store that’s ever done this on Long Island, in New York, anywhere,” said Susan Schrager, one of the owners.

All proceeds from the sale of the pink bagels — which cost the same as regular bagels — will go to the American Cancer Society. Schrager also said that for one week, all staff tips would also go to the American Cancer Society.

This is not the first charitable venture for Brower Bagels. Earlier this month, they donated 100 mini-bagels to the Buddy Walk for Down syndrome in Jones Beach.

“We’re going to do a different cause every two months,” said Schrager. “So this isn’t the only thing that we’ll be doing.” Schrager said that in the future, Brower Bagels will also support Black History Month and Building Homes for Heroes, an organization that builds house for injured veterans returning from war.

“I’m personally very involved in that cause,” said Schrager. Her husband, Frank Phelan, is on the board for Building Homes for Heroes.
