The suspect who was fatally wounded following a botched robbery in North Valley Stream last week killed himself, police have confirmed.

According to Inspector Kenneth Lack of the Nassau County Police Department’s Public Information Office, 37-year-old Timothy Capers turned the gun on himself when he realized the “horrifically desperate situation” he was in. “It was a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” Lack said. “Who knows what he was thinking?”

Police say that Capers and his accomplice, 43-year-old Levy Robinson, both of Queens, forced their way into a home at the corner of Dana Avenue and Howell Road at about 9:15 p.m. on Jan. 16, tied up three people and began looking for money.

Both Capers and Robinson were armed with handguns, according to police. Capers and police officers exchanged gunfire in the home, while Robinson hid in a back room and was later arrested. According to Lack, Capers was in the center of the ranch-style home when he killed himself.

Robinson, who is being held in jail without bail following his Jan. 18 arraignment, faces seven felony charges, including burglary, robbery and weapons possession.

Two adults and four children who were in the home were safely rescued by police. Lack said that they stayed with other family members in the immediate aftermath of the incident. He was unsure if they have returned home. He added that they expressed their appreciation for the efforts of police officers.
