Belmont Park’s 38-day Fall Meet opened last Friday with Glennevan capturing the first race, a 6 ½ furlong maiden-claiming sprint on the dirt with jockey Angel S. Arroyo aboard.

Glennevan was patiently handled through a half-mile and was between horses entering the stretch when Arroyo asked for more. The four-year-old bay gelding fought his way to the lead and pulled away to win by more than two lengths. Owned and trained by David Jacobsen, Glennevan paid $14.80 to win.

“He was cutting back in distance from his previous races, so I didn’t know if he was going to be surprised or not,” Arroyo said. “I sat a perfect trip and he was strong all the way around.”

A total of 42 stakes worth more than $10 million, two “super” Saturdays and fan-friendly activities are among the highlights for the meet, which runs through Sunday, Oct. 30.

Live racing is generally conducted Wednesdays through Sundays, with first race post time at 1:30 p.m. through Sunday, Oct. 2, after which opening post moves to 12:55 p.m. General parking is free, and admission is $5.
