Ready to shop till she drops
Far Rockaway resident wins Cedarhurst shopping spree
When Leah Mond walked into LuLu’s Gallery of Gifts on Central Avenue in Cedarhurst on Jan. 25 with her mother and two young children to claim the $1,000 Cedarhurst shopping spree she won, she wore a smile from ear to ear. The Far Rockaway resident entered the shopping-spree contest at Cedarhurst’s Black Friday event in November. When she received the notification that she had won, she couldn’t believe it. “I saw the box on the counter at LuLu’s and decided to take a chance,” she said. “I got an email and a phone call saying I won, and I thought it was a joke.” Teri Schure, executive director of the Cedarhurst Business Improvement District, notified Mond on Jan. 11 that she had won the contest. “It’s amazing, and I’m really excited,” Mond said. Her mother, Helene Teper, a Woodmere resident, said she is delighted that her daughter won and hopes she spoils herself. “I hope she spends some of it on herself,” Teper said, “but because of the person she is, I know she’ll spend most of it on her children. She’s always giving to others and rarely pampers herself.” Mond said she would treat herself, at least in part. “I’ll spend some on my kids and husband,” she said, “but I’ll spoil myself, too.” According to Schure, this is the second time the Cedarhurst BID has held a shopping-spree contest. “We started doing it last summer during the annual Sidewalk Sale,” she said. “It’s a great idea to bring in foot traffic to the village.” During the three-day Sidewalk Sale last July, a total of 6,000 shopping-spree entries were received. The Black Friday event, Nov. 25 to 27, attracted 2,500 entries. “We’ll keep doing it at every event, so hopefully more people know about it and fill out tickets,” Schure said. Orly, Plum, Cravingz, Dimples and LuLu’s Gallery of Gifts were just some of the 31 merchants that took part in the contests. Louise Kramer, a 13-year owner of LuLu’s, at 484 Central Ave., said she was excited that the shopping spree winner was picked in her store. “This is who should win and whom the $1,000 means something to,” she said about Mond. “She is very deserving and a steady customer of ours.” Asked about the benefits of having such a contest, Kramer said simply, “It brings in more business.” A frequent Cedarhurst shopper, Mond patronizes the village’s stores because of what she described as their welcoming atmosphere, their proximity to her home and the variety of merchandise they offer. “I shop here because everyone’s friendly and it’s very convenient,” she said. “Everything I need is here.”
