How Tisha B’Av is observed in the U.S.
Tisha B’Av is observed by Jewish people in the United States on the ninth day of the month of Av in the Jewish calendar.
Typically observance of the holiday includes fasting, not washing, shaving and using cosmetics; not wearing leather shoes, not performing work and sexual abstinence.
Many of the traditional mourning practices are included, such as refraining from smiling and laughing. The book of Lamentations —a collection of poetic laments for the destruction of Jerusalem — is read and mourning prayers are recited in synagogue. The ark that contains the Torah is draped in black.
