The Housing Authority has applied for a $250,000 grant, made available by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, to install surveillance cameras and lighting in the area. Scott found out about the grant, and led the effort to pursue it.

“Then we’ll no longer need witnesses,” Tangney said.

Long Beach residents from outside the North Park area spoke up at the council meeting as well. One, John McNally, said that the city needs to engage the wider community, and that the various neighborhood civics organizations should work together on the issue of gun violence. He also said that Long Beach has a number of retired law enforcement agents with decades of experience, and the city should tap their knowledge.

“This issue did not develop overnight,” McNally said. “It will not be solved overnight. But we need to start now.”
