Roberta Sanders, at 86, was teacher, trustee

Roberta Joan (Frost) Sanders, wife of Morton Sanders for 66 years, died peacefully at home on Dec. 26, 2014. She was 86.

She was preceded in death by her sister Ruth Sklar Robinson and brother Dr. John Marshall Frost. She was the daughter of the late Anna and Dr. Maxwell Frost.

In addition to her husband, Sanders is survived by sister-in-law Sylvia Suzowsky Idelson of South Carolina; sons Michael (Sally) of Chester, Conn., and James (Holly Bussey) of Yardley, Pa.; daughter Janet Bunnell (Kevin) of Owego, N.Y.; grandchildren Matthew Sanders, Zachary Sanders, Chelsea (Jason) Donlin, Benjamin Bunnell, Bryan (Celia) Bunnell, and great-grandson Jackson Donlin. Special appreciation goes to her loving caregivers.

Sanders was born and raised in New York City. She and her husband raised their family in Merrick, where Sanders was a resident for more than 40 years and where she was active in many civic and community activities, including serving on the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District Board of Education.

Sanders returned to school to complete her education and received her degree from Hofstra University in 1970, after which she taught for 20 years and retired from the Long Beach School District in 1990. Her creativity and love of learning was shared with her many students over the years.

In retirement, she continued her passion for learning and became an accomplished sculptor and jewelry artisan.
