Run With the Rams set for May 10

Proceeds will benefit student with cancer, sports programs

Josh Friedman’s favorite part of Run With the Rams is standing on the finish line of the 1-mile fun run and seeing the happy expressions on children’s faces when they complete the race.

It’s that enjoyment of fitness that validates the annual run that Friedman co-created in 2008.

The fun run precedes the main event, a 5K run/walk that begins and ends outside W.T. Clarke High School in Salisbury. Friedman, the school’s athletic director for seven years, chairs the event with Clarke Middle School Athletic Director Janine Heilbronn. Now in its sixth year, the race has become one of the Salisbury community’s most highly anticipated events. This year’s race is set for May 10.

Friedman said that he and Heilbronn wanted to bring an event to the community several years ago that would promote fitness and health education. While options like carnivals and field days were considered, the pair ultimately decided on a 5K and a fun run.

Equally important, the event donates more than $1,000 each year to a local family in need. This year, that money will go to the family of Kenneth Sayles, a Clarke sophomore who was diagnosed with brain cancer last October.

Other proceeds are used to support school athletics. “We felt the run encapsulated everything we wanted to get across,” said Friedman, 42. “We can raise money … and bring health and fitness to the community.”
