Snow piles up, temps plunge

A National Weather Service winter storm warning began at noon Tuesday for Nassau County, and will remain in effect until 6 a.m. Wednesday.

Residents can expect heavy and blowing snow, with winds at 15 to 25 miles per hour and gusts up to 35 miles per hour, and a snow accumulation of eight to 12 inches. The heaviest snowfall was expected late Tuesday afternoon into night. 

Temperatures dropped into the lower teens Tuesday night. Wind chill values as low as -8 degrees were predicted.

The National Weather Service warned that visibility would be heavily impaired during the storm. Falling, blowing and drifting snow caused hazardous travel and walking conditions, affecting commuters' travels.

North wind around 18 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100 percent. New snow accumulation of 5 to 9 inches possible.

A slight chance of snow before 9 a.m. Mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming sunny, with a high near 18. Wind chill values as low as -6. Northwest wind around 17 mph, with gusts as high as 29 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20 percent.
