Port Washington Play Troupe invites the Community to “Step Into an Actor’s Shoes”
PORT WASHINGTON, New York, February 4, 2013 – Port Washington Play Troupe will present its next “SPOTLIGHT ON THEATER: Behind-the-Scenes Conversations with Coffee & Confections” event on Thursday, Feb. 28, 2013, from 7:30-9pm in the Lapham Meeting Room at the Port Washington Public Library, inviting the community to "Step Into an Actor's Shoes." Admission is free.
The evening will be led by seasoned actor/director and theater educator Kate Beckman, and as always, will conclude with coffee, conversation, and sumptuous desserts provided by Blanka's Kitchen, a Port-Washington based catering company.
Beckman has decades of experience as a performer, and has also taught theater and speech extensively at Hofstra University, St. John’s University and Nassau Community College, among others. For “Step Inside an Actor’s Shoes,” she’ll invite participants to take an intimate look at the actor’s craft and explore the actors’ toolbox: how to analyze a script, create a character, and bring a role to life. There will be opportunities for audience participation (at varying levels).
“If you have ever been curious as to how an actor prepares and creates a role, then come and join us,” Beckman urges. “You are welcome to listen or even participate, whatever is comfortable for you. You may find yourself bitten by the ‘theater bug’ and ready to explore the theater further, either in front of the footlights or behind.”
Interested community members can contact Play Troupe by phone at (516) 473-6243, by email at PortWashingtonPlayTroupe@gmail.com, or by visiting the Facebook page (www.facebook.com/ portwashingtonplaytroupe). Tax-deductible donations accepted c/o Play Troupe at 59 Edgewood Rd., Port Washington, 11050.
About Port Washington Play Troupe’s “SPOTLIGHT ON THEATER” Series
“SPOTLIGHT ON THEATER: Behind-the-Scenes Conversations with Coffee & Confections” is a monthly discussion series on the making of theater, with special guests, casual conversations and desserts provided by Blanka’s Kitchen. It takes place at the Port Washington Public Library. The series inaugurated on January 24, 2013, when over 60 attendees gathered to hear about Play Troupe’s rich past from local historian Andrew Batten and view an exhibit of company artifacts, including items on loan from the Port Washington Public Library (Local History Department).
About Port Washington Play Troupe
Celebrating its 85th year in 2012, Play Troupe is New York State's oldest chartered amateur theater company, dedicated to creating outstanding work in a positive, community-minded atmosphere for every generation in Port Washington. The group was founded in 1927 and spawned diverse programs from the Port Washington Play Troupe Children’s Show, the Teen Summer Theater (now independent, and known as the Port Washington Summer Show), Harbor Theater Company (specializing in unique musicals), and the Varsity Choral Society (specializing in classical choral music). Since 1995, the only Play Troupe program to remain active was the Varsity Choral Society. But in 2012, the company announced a major revival.
