Valley Stream Central High School District students have earned awards and acknowledgments for their musical talents, which they share in the schools and community throughout the year. Additionally, Memorial Junior High School hosted one of the largest NYSSMA All-State and All-State Jazz festivals in New York State on May 20 and 21.

South High School’s Chamber Orchestra, under the direction of Elizabeth Pichichero, participated in the NYSSMA Majors Festival at Hofstra University on May 16. Orchestras from all across Nassau County attended the festival where the groups performed and were adjudicated. The South students represented their school with pride and came home with a silver medal. In addition to presenting the award, adjudicators commented on how professionally the group performed, looked and behaved.

North High School’s Junior High Jazz Ensemble and Senior High Breakfast Club String Ensemble participated in the High Note Music Festival at Six Flags, Great Adventure in New Jersey on Friday, May 13. They performed to critical acclaim and both groups received a superior rating for their performance. The Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Mike Morris and the Breakfast Club, under the direction of Rebecca Hayden, meet twice weekly before school for rehearsals and perform at concerts and various functions throughout the school year.
