Sup't DeAngelo to retire next month

East Meadow School District Superintendent Louis DeAngelo will retire at the end of the school year, he announced in a letter on the district’s website on May 15.

DeAngelo, who has served as schools chief for the past six years and has worked in East Meadow for three decades, will leave on June 30. “Together, as a district, we have accomplished a great deal over the course of the past number of years,” he wrote, “and I am extremely proud to have led our district in those efforts.”

A native of Old Bethpage, DeAngelo was a teacher for 11 years before he was hired by East Meadow to serve as director of special education. He became assistant superintendent for human resources in 2001, and was named superintendent in 2009, replacing Leon Campo.

District administration and Board of Education trustees had come under fire in recent months over the lack of a full-day kindergarten program, a delay in allowing students who refused the state tests to read quietly at their desks, and a perceived lack of communication. At a heated board meeting earlier this month, Parent Teacher Association Council President Tracy Allred Pulice called for immediate changes.

Board President Joseph Parisi said that he and his colleagues had thanked DeAngelo for his 30 years of service to the district upon hearing his decision. “He’s a person who has cared for the kids of the district,” Parisi said.
