Surf Week returns to Long Beach

Skudin also said that “Empire Now,” the movie that will be premiering during Surf Week, is the first of its kind. NYSEA and Transition Productions teamed up to make the film, with Skudin producing it. He described it as a “surf thriller” — part surfing movie and part thriller movie.

“It’s definitely outside the box, and we definitely have a surprise for everybody once you see it,” he said.

Additionally, Surf Week includes two surfing outings through Surf for All, a local nonprofit organization that provides surfing opportunities for people with disabilities and special needs. Outings for the blind and visually impaired and for students at The Henry Viscardi School, a school for physically disabled children, will be held during the week.

“That’s been a real driving force of NY Surf Week,” Skudin said. “It’s part of giving back to the community, that’s what we do.”

The professional surf contest was held on Wednesday, after storms earlier in the week brought big swells to Long Beach, and the kids’ surf contest was slated for Thursday. Friday’s summer party, to be held at Warehouse 5 in Island Park, will include an indoor half pipe skate jam alongside the DJ and dancing, Skudin said. On Saturday, National Boulevard boardwalk will come alive with hours of live bands performing, and a professional half pipe skate jam at night. At kid’s night, groms will be able to ride a mechanical surfboard—the youth version of a mechanical bull, he said.

“It’s an event that’s built for every demographic and every age,” Skudin said. “From skating to surfing, parties, premieres, there’s something for everyone at NY Surf Week.”
