Brad Gerstman, founder of the Anti-Semitism Action Fund, has offered $1,000 to Nassau County Crime Stoppers for anyone with information that could help catch the person or persons who defaced a part of a waiting area partition at the Lawrence Long Island Rail Road with swastikas earlier this month.
The drawing swastikas has been a recurring problem at LIRR stations in the Five Towns, especially Cedarhurst. The offending vandalism was removed on Aug. 10, LIRR officials said.
“Swastikas represent one of the greatest evils perpetrated in all of world history, and we need to come together as community to identify the culprits and stop this heinous behavior before it continues to grow,” Gerstman said in a prepared release.
Crime Stoppers can be contacted at 1 (800) 244-8477.
Following this latest incident, Assemblyman Todd Kaminsky (D-Long Beach) asked the LIRR to install surveillance cameras at the Lawrence station as he previously did for the Cedarhurst station.
“The most effective way to prevent hate speech from spreading is to stop it from happening in the first place,” Kaminsky said in a press release. “Cameras provide a great measure of deterrence and send a message that hate speech will not be tolerated.
