Sylvan Place residents honor their own

“We want Chris remembered at South High School,” Wally Schroeder said. “This is a way to do that. It’s very touching that the neighborhood would come through like this.”

Sylvan Place hosted its annual holiday block party on Dec. 20. Many of the homes had elaborate light displays. There was also a visit from Santa, a fire truck, and hot chocolate. Donations were collected from visitors and those funds, along with money residents on the block chipped in, funded the charitable contributions.

Alex Carr, who organized the block party, hosted the check presentations as his home. He said the residents of the street typically make a donation every year, and this year they decided to do it in honor of two of their own.

“I though the generosity of people was very nice,” he said. “It’s tough to make ends meet, so I thought it was nice that people were still able to help out.”

Miller said she is grateful to the residents of Sylvan Place, and all those who contributed money, for it will make a difference to her program. “I’m so touched,” she said. “I’m absolutely floored.”
