Hurricane Joaquin expected to pass east of Long Island

Keep up-todate on storm precautions

Hurricane Joaquin is now forecast to move east of Long Island from Monday evening into Tuesday morning and spare the region from a direct hit of what was a Category 4 storm that hit the Bahamas, according to the National Hurricane Center.
A high surf advisory is in effect until 6 p.m. Sunday and a coastal flood advisory is in effect through 3 p.m. this afternoon.
Village of Cedarhurst officials reminded rresidents about precautions they can take in case of such a storm  to possibly limit property damage and maintain personal safety.
Residents in a flood zone can park their vehicles in one of the village’s municipal lots. The highest ground elevations are in the business district. Place a note on the dashboard that reads: “Parked Due to Flooding Conditions” and your name and address.
In preparation of the hurricane, make sure you have a battery-powered radio and fresh batteries; have flashlights, blankets, nonperishable food and bottled water; create an emergency communications plan to reach family members; charge cell phones, tablets and other mobile devices.

Make sure you have cash as banks may be closed or inaccessible after the storm. Fill up vehicle fuel ranks. Take in unsecured objects and furniture from patios and balconies. Remove tables and chairs from Sukkahs. Schach should be tied down as flying object could cause property damage, personal injury or death.
Compile a list of emergency numbers such as PSEG Long Island’s electric service line — 1(800) 490-0075.
Listen to news for emergency updates. Should you hear thunder, move inside and remain there for at least 30 minutes after the last thunderclap. Avoid using electrical equipment. Use battery-powered devices instead. Stay away from windows.
Do not take a bath or shower, and avoid flushing toilets if you can. Defer dishwashing until the storm has passed. If driving, safely exit the roadway and park. Stay in the vehicle and turn on emergency flashers until the heavy rain ends.
