The Lynbrook Public Schools: a productive year ahead

As the new school year approaches, the Lynbrook Public Schools continue to move ahead with innovative programs that will provide our students with the tools needed to achieve success in college and the ever-changing workforce.

Because innovation and collaboration are essential for our students to be the inventors and trendsetters of the future, our district has made it a priority to build a solid foundation in science, technology, engineering, art and math. The Summer STEAM Academy, now in its third year, continues to provide middle school students with an opportunity to explore their interests in video game design and robotics in a collaborative and creative environment. This past summer, an art component as well as an exploratory science component rounded out the STEAM package for those who attended.

The district’s One to World tablet program has now expanded to the entire middle school level at both North Middle and South Middle. Each student will have a personal device and stylus to use as the medium for all schoolwork and collaboration. In a short time, the students have become quite adept at the devices and are motivated to conduct their work in an efficient and comprehensive manner.

At the elementary schools, the math rotation and literacy rotation models continue. Work tables are established to provide students with a diverse approach to learning the necessary strategies and skills to become thinkers and problem solvers.

Again, Lynbrook High School has been recognized as a New York State Reward school. Students at Lynbrook High School are overall high performers on Regents exams and the school is recognized for that accomplishment as a result. Our academic programs provide students with diverse opportunities to prepare them for college and careers beyond their LHS years.

In addition, a great deal of work has taken place in our building facilities. We strive to maintain our buildings and provide a comfortable learning environment for all students. We use various sources of funding for these projects to provide our students with the space that is needed to grow and develop. Work will begin this year on the replacement of the windows at the Kindergarten Center building. Bathrooms in several buildings have also been updated over the summer. One of the computer labs in the high school has been renovated to adapt to the changing curriculum to include multi-media production.

The Board of Education has made one of its top goals to provide instruction that is student- centered. The theme of this year’s calendar is “It’s All About the Kids.” By the work and actions of the staff of the Lynbrook Public Schools, we hope it is visible that we strive to meet the needs of the individual child in a manner that is best for the child. All are here to support our students academically, emotionally, socially as well as in many extra-curricular areas.

We are grateful to the community for its continued support of educational initiatives that help us achieve our goals. Passage of the budget and proposition proposals has allowed us to strive for our maximum potential.
