The Shoregasboard to return this summer

Food trucks will roll again, city brings back more concessions along boardwalk

Beachgoers will again have more food options to look forward to this summer, when the city rolls out its food truck court — the Shoregasboard — and brings back a variety of food vendors and concessions that will be stationed along the boardwalk and on the beach.

The city entered into agreements with a number of vendors, almost all of them local, for the upcoming summer season for a total of $80,500, plus a reimbursement of $9,180 to be paid to the city for costs associated with maintenance and upkeep of the Shoregasboard area, at Riverside Boulevard.

City Manager Jack Schnirman said that the Shoregasboard and expanded concessions have increased revenue for the city over past years — before the boardwalk was rebuilt after Hurricane Sandy, Long Beach traditionally had only one food vendor on the boardwalk, which previously brought in about $70,000.

“From what we’re seeing across the beach and boardwalk now, and with so much more food and variety, we’re looking at revenue of approximately $80,000,” he said. “And we’re proud to see that revenue growing as well.”

City officials said that the idea to provide new food options and amenities grew out of the boardwalk surveys and public forums the city has held over the past two years, including last year’s Long Beach Listens community outreach initiative, as the city moved forward with the second phase of its boardwalk rebuild.

“In response to community feedback,” City Manager Jack Schnirman said, “the city last year offered more concessions situated along the beach and on the boardwalk in order to provide residents and visitors with an abundance of choices in convenient locations, a greater diversity of food products, excellent quality foods with a local flavor, while showing preference to local food merchants and those who have previously provided food services. After a successful 2014 summer season, it’s now time to continue forward to provide a wide variety of foods and refreshments in convenient locations. We have a return of our Shoregasboard food truck market, in fact a slight expansion of it.”
