The group is an eclectic bunch, ranging from homemakers to retirees. Some have written professionally, while others are new to writing, but they all share a passion for the poetry, memoirs and prose they create.

David Stayer, a group member for four years, is blind. “I enjoy it because I can write about my experiences as a blind person, yet still be accepted as a person who is a writer,” he said.

John Barden, a group member since February, happened upon the program in Hempstead’s annual complimentary calendar. An English teacher for 11 years out of college, Barden said he knew since childhood that poetry, reading and writing sparked his interest. His poetry is inspired mostly by human relationships and interactions.

“I’ve met so many wonderful people, so many young-at-heart people,” Barden said of the program. “It’s the best thing I’ve done all year.”
